March 2022 Update

Mar 2nd, 2022 by Tim Cullings

Hello Indies!

Looks like things are ramping up again, with a bunch of events coming up soon. Dust out your calendars and hand sanitizers, and get ready for some networking!

Executive Director Update

2022 is already off to a difficult start for a lot of reasons and we hope you are doing your best to practice self care and giving yourself some space to recharge and focus on your mental and physical well being. We recently made statements condemning the anti-trans legislation passed in Texas and in support of the people of Ukraine who are being violently attacked by their neighbors in Russia and provided resources for you to get involved and help support people affected by these events. We also put our money where our mouth is and thanks to the generous support of our Patreon supporters were able to make donations to TENT and the Ukraine Red Cross. These actions both go directly against our mission of safety and inclusion and we stand with those affected.

On the home front March is shaping up to be a very busy month for Seattle Indies. We are hosting a Town Hall meeting on Discord this Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 1 PM where you will hear updates from the Board and be able to ask questions about Seattle Indies and our plans for the future. There are a whole host of other events coming up this month that you can read about in the update below and we hope to see you at some of those including the return to in-person socials at Optimism on March 15, 2022!

I am happy to report that we successfully launched our mentorship program last month with our first round of 60 mentor/mentee matches made. So far we have received very positive feedback from the mentors who have had meetings with their mentees and are excited to hear about the progress they make together. Applications are always open to be a mentor or mentee, new matches will be made once per Quarter as we have availability for mentors. If you signed up as a mentee and didn’t get a mentor assigned to you yet we will make another round of matches by the end of June if not sooner based on availability.

Harassment Policy, AAPI, Black Lives Matter, and Resources

Seattle Indies stands with the AAPI community. We are here for our members who have been affected by the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes both locally and nationally. For further resources to educate yourself on the issue and how to take action, here is a useful link: https://anti-asianviolenceresources.carrd.co/

Seattle Indies is starting to have in person meetups again and we need everyone to get vaccinated and boosted against the COVID-19 virus as soon as you are able. The Washington State Department of Health has this website for information on where you can get vaccinated in your area.

Seattle Indies believes the stories of the victims of sexual harassment and assault in the games industry that have been shared. We strongly condemn the actions by people in power preying on the dreams of vulnerable people trying to make their way in the industry and strive to build an inclusive community that welcomes all minorities to provide a safe environment and a better vision for the game industry.

While our code of conduct states a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind we are especially sensitive to the daily challenges faced by womxn due to the ingrained sexism that has existed in the structure of the games industry for far too long. We are actively working to build a better community of game developers and we all need to do better.

Additionally, Board Member August Belhumeur has offered to be a personal resource for anyone who needs help, someone to talk to or some guidance on next steps if you have experienced harassment in the industry either at our events or elsewhere. She can be reached at august@seattleindies.org.

Our friends at Take This Org have compiled valuable resources for anyone in immediate need of professional help for their situation.

Lastly, Seattle Indies and Diversity Collective+ support Black Lives Matter. Here are some resources compiled by Diversity Collective+ for how you can offer support, whether this is financial, contributing to petitions, preparing for protests, or getting informed.
