June 2026 Update

Happy Pride month, Indies!
Hello Indies!
I recently had the privilege of being invited to speak at Morocco Gaming Expo and had a chance to meet the growing game developer community there. Everywhere I travel I am asked about how we built this amazing community, and the things we do to support you all. I also get asked if I can replicate that success in whatever part of the world I am visiting. The answer to that is that it is possible but it takes dedicated effort by a team of organizers working together to build an environment that feels welcoming to people who share a passion for game development and for upholding the code of conduct that governs how we expect people to behave and treat each other. We are fortunate to have so many volunteers and organizers who are dedicated to the mission of Seattle Indies that have inspired people far and wide to do the same for their communities. Check out our roster of organizers here, thank them for their work if you see them at an event and volunteer to help if you are interested in hosting a new event or joining one of our existing committees.
2026 marks our tenth year as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and we plan to celebrate in style as we head into our major events season of the summer picnic, SLICE and SIX. SIX judging is in full swing, with a record 115 entries this year our judges are diligently playing the games, scoring them and providing critical feedback that will be delivered to every developer who applied to SIX this year. We will be narrowing it down to the top 40 games to showcase this year and look forward to seeing you all on Sunday September 6th, 2026 at the Hilton Motif Seattle from Noon-9pm. Free and open to the public as always! For over 15 years SIX has served as the launchpad for indie games, studios and developers that have turned into cornerstones of our community and the industry at large, see the next wave at SIX 2026.
SLICE will be returning on Wednesday September 2, 2026 at McCaw Hall with another slate of panels, workshops, roundtable discussions, and some exciting new features we’ll be announcing in the very near future along with this year’s lineup of speakers, presenters and topics.
Looking forward to the next decade
For the past two years members of the board have been working to secure our future for the next decade and beyond. We have been focused on finding a physical location for Seattle Indies to support the myriad of events and programming we have for our community as well as to serve as a space for community co-working and potential accelerator and incubator programs. It has been a long and challenging process, you may recall in 2024 we asked for support for a federal grant to fund the WA State Gaming Innovation hub that we applied for. We were able to secure over $500k in matching funds in just under 3 weeks to put in that bid. Ultimately that grant opportunity went away due to changes in the Federal government and policies of the new administration but we were undeterred.
We have since joined forces with some other amazing organizations that service the creative economy in Seattle including Seattle Creates, Future Arts, Revere XR and a few others to put together a bid for City funding for our new vision of a Creative Economy Innovation Hub hosted on the Seattle Waterfront in the building on Pier 54. This Tuesday (6/2) we are making our final pitch to the City of Seattle Office of Economic Development for said funding and we could once again use your support. This time we ask you to take a few minutes to fill out this survey and give feedback on why you think this is an important initiative for the City of Seattle to support and how you or your studio would make use of such a facility. The vision is to have programming to provide workforce development for anyone in the creative economy to prepare them to work in games, art, tech, live events, XR, music, fashion, design and more. Creating an engine to fuel explosive growth of the creative economy in Seattle that already accounts for nearly $26B in annual revenue.
Check out all of our events like Playtest Club that is giving the public a chance to check out what our community has to offer and our monthly socials continue to grow from Olympia to Bremerton and most places in between. The East Side meetup is moving to its new home at Flatstick Pub this month, we hope to see you there.

Seattle Indies Summer Picnic – Sunday, July 19th, 2026 Starting at 12:00 PM
The Seattle Indies Summer Picnic is back at Madrona Park on Sunday July 19th! As much as we enjoyed the show with the Blue Angels last year, we decided to move it back a couple of weeks so the park will be a little less crowded and less noisy for everyone. We will once again be grilling up burgers and dogs and veggie options, we will have our outdoor games and friends and family are always welcome! Bring your favorite dish or snack to share if you like but we will have plenty of food and soft drinks available for everyone to enjoy.
SIX (Seattle Indies Expo) – Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM
SIX is a free one-day celebration of independent games and game creators from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We consistently hear from attendees that SIX is one of the best events of that entire weekend alongside the other major gaming expo happening around the corner from SIX and in 2025 we welcomed nearly 5,000 guests who came through to spend the day checking out the games and chatting with the developers and community members.
Recently, SIX Submissions have been officially closed with a new record of 115 submissions, smashing the 90 submissions we received last year! In 2025 we selected the top 40, both all-time records in our 15 year history and we expect no less in 2026! Additionally, due to the high demand and increase in quality of the games we were able to expand SIX 2025 to take over two full ballrooms in Hilton Motif Seattle. We also combined SIX Online, our streaming showcase of the games with our in-person showcase and managed to interview all 40 teams on the live stream to help build the buzz both in-person and online for our biggest day of the year.
We will be returning to do the same on Sunday September 6th, 2026 with a full day of incredible locally-made indie games and the developers who made them!
Want to volunteer for SIX 2026? Sign up now to be a part of our biggest public facing event of the year https://six.seattleindies.org/volunteer
SIX IRL will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM on the 3rd & 4th floors of the Hilton Motif Seattle (1415 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101)
SIX ONLINE will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 on the Seattle Indies Twitch channel!

This Month’s feature is Randy Huynh
I’m a solo independent game developer focused on creating tightly scoped experiences that capture the spirit of the games I grew up playing.

Link to the Press Kit for Blade Blitz by Hella Studios (founded by Randy Huynh): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10YCgvWJTtFVuRKAysETaaqm1xbWAeE4N?usp=sharing
What inspired you to become a game developer?
I’ve always been drawn to games as a storytelling medium. Growing up, I was playing games to an unhealthy degree. I was enraptured in the worlds, the characters, and stories. I was already working at an indie game studio, so it wasn’t a giant leap to start my own journey into solo, indie game development. It was a bucket-list item to ship something of my own one day and I really had no excuses to not start now.
What is one important lesson you have learned in your time as a game developer?
I had a small scope for my game, yet it still took almost three years to make. It’s always harder than you anticipate, bigger than what you wanted to take on, and more time consuming in execution. So make it even smaller if you want to ship in a year.
What is the one piece of advice you would share today with your younger self before you started your career as a game developer?
Don’t wait, you’ll learn faster just by doing.
How has the game developer community had an impact on your career?
Solo game development is a lonely endeavor. It’s a lot of time by yourself, throwing your heart and soul into a project. It’s all too easy to get in your own head and doubt yourself because you’re afraid all the physical and emotional investment will amount to nothing. Seattle Indies is a good way to take to others who walk in those same shoes. And it was invaluable to have my game at SIX to validate the game.
What is something interesting and unexpected that people would be surprised to learn about you?
I think most people don’t know about the competitive pinball scene in Seattle. It’s only gotten larger the past decade I’ve been playing, but it’s over 300 people now playing pinball in the Monday Night Pinball League. I played in the league for almost a decade, but had to leave as the co-captain of the Raygun Lounge’s team, the Magic Saves, this year because I’m a soon-to-be father.
How can people follow you and your work?
I have my own personal portfolio site: https://www.randyhuynh.com/

We don’t require polished art here – make sure it’s fun before you pretty it up!

Harassment Policy, AAPI, Black Lives Matter, and Resources
Seattle Indies stands with the AAPI community. We are here for our members who have been affected by the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes both locally and nationally. For further resources to educate yourself on the issue and how to take action, here is a useful link: https://anti-asianviolenceresources.carrd.co/
Seattle Indies believes the stories of the victims of sexual harassment and assault in the games industry that have been shared. We strongly condemn the actions by people in power preying on the dreams of vulnerable people trying to make their way in the industry. We strive to build an inclusive community that welcomes all minorities to provide a safe environment and a better vision for the game industry.
While our code of conduct states a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, we are especially sensitive to the daily challenges faced by womxn due to the ingrained sexism that has existed in the structure of the games industry for far too long. We are actively working to build a better community of game developers, and we all need to do better.
Additionally, Board Member Angel Mero has offered to be a personal resource for anyone who needs help, someone to talk to or some guidance on next steps if you have experienced harassment in the industry either at our events or elsewhere. She can be reached at angel@seattleindies.org.
Our friends at Take This Org have compiled valuable resources for anyone in immediate need of professional help for their situation.
Lastly, Seattle Indies and Diversity Collective+ support Black Lives Matter. Here are some resources compiled by Diversity Collective+ for how you can offer support, whether this is financial, contributing to petitions, preparing for protests, or getting informed. If you have additional resources, comment below and we will add them.

As always, keep an eye on our Discord for any last-minute news and discussion, and let us know about any projects you’re working on that you’d like shared on our Steam or Itch collections or follow us on all of our social media platforms.
