May 2026 Update

May 4th, 2026 by Tim Cullings

Happy May, Indies!

Hello Indies! Spring time here and Seattle Indies Expo (SIX) 2026 applications are still open!

The weather is getting warmer and things are heating up for Seattle Indies with SIX applications closing soon, SLICE planning in full swing, the Niantic Show & Tell is back to a regular cadence, Playtest Club is giving the public a chance to check out what our community has to offer and our monthly socials continue to grow from Olympia to Bremerton and most places in between.

The big news is that the annual Seattle Indies Summer Picnic is back at Madrona Park on Sunday July 19th! As much as we enjoyed the show with the Blue Angels last year we decided to move it back a couple of weeks so the park will be a little less crowded and less noisy for everyone. We will once again be grilling up burgers and dogs and veggie options, we will have our outdoor games and friends and family are always welcome! Bring your favorite dish or snack to share if you like but we will have plenty of food and soft drinks available for everyone to enjoy.

With Mother’s Day being on May 10th we decided to extend SIX Submissions through the end of the day on Wednesday May 13th. The standard $6 submission fee applies and you are guaranteed to get at least 5 pieces of feedback from our panel of expert community judges who will play and rank the games and decide which are the top 40 that will be showcased at SIX 2026!

SIX will be taking place at Hilton Motif Seattle again this year on Sunday September 6th, 2026 from Noon-9pm. Free and open to the public as always. We will also be bringing back SLICE, our game dev/industry focused conference that launched in 2025 to stellar reviews and higher than expected attendance.

Slice Your Way to Slice!

Seattle Indies is spearheading an entirely new way to run a fundraiser in the gaming community! Through this first of its kind competition our great community can show off their gaming prowess and win some amazing prizes from Seattle Indies, JOLT Cola, Pixel Strategy and Twin Galaxies!

OBJECTIVE:

Brought to you by Seattle Indies! Play Breakpoint by Studio Aeshesia and the Quantum Astrophysicists Guild  and try to score the highest Final Score in a single game!

Breakpoint is available on PC and Nintendo Switch. You can download the game here from the STEAM store.

ELIGIBILITY:

In order to enter the competition and be eligible for prizes you must make a minimum $10 donation to Seattle Indies through the official donation page. Of course a larger donation is accepted!

Check the official contest page on our website for more information about prizes and how to enter.

SIX (Seattle Indies Expo)

Game submissions for SIX 2026 are officially open! Submit your game now and for just a $6 submission fee you are guaranteed to receive at least 5 pieces of feedback from games industry veterans and community peers

SIX is a free one-day celebration of independent games and game creators from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We consistently hear from attendees that SIX is one of the best events of that entire weekend alongside the other major gaming expo happening around the corner from SIX and in 2025 we welcomed nearly 5,000 guests who came through to spend the day checking out the games and chatting with the developers and community members.

In 2025 we had nearly 90 submissions and selected the top 40, both all-time records in our 15 year history and we expect no less in 2026! Additionally, due to the high demand and increase in quality of the games we were able to expand SIX 2025 to take over two full ballrooms in Hilton Motif Seattle. We also combined SIX Online, our streaming showcase of the games with our in-person showcase and managed to interview all 40 teams on the live stream to help build the buzz both in-person and online for our biggest day of the year.

We will be returning to do the same on Sunday September 6th, 2026 with a full day of incredible locally-made indie games and the developers who made them!

Submissions are open now until Sunday, May 10th, 2026 @ 11:59 PM so get your games submitted now to avoid the last minute rush. https://six.seattleindies.org/apply/

Want to be a juror for SIX 2026? Sign up on the form on the Volunteer page and help us select the top games from this year’s submissions to be a part of SIX 2026!

Each juror must review at least 5 games, jurors who review 10 will get a free SIX t-shirt, review 20 and get a special secret gift. Jurors who show up to SIX in-person will get 2 free drink tickets. https://six.seattleindies.org/volunteer

SIX IRL will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM on the 3rd & 4th floors of the Hilton Motif Seattle (1415 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101)

SIX ONLINE will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 on the Seattle Indies Twitch channel!

This Month’s feature is Sam Long

Sam is a game developer currently living in Edmonds, Washington. Sam has worked on games for over 10 years, but only recently got into the games industry. After getting laid off last year from the games industry, Sam has worked on his own project, Draco and the Seven Scales, releasing 2026!

What inspired you to become a game developer?

My highschool actually had an “Intro to Game Design” class. The class was not very good, but it lit the fire in my belly to keep reaching towards game development!

What is one important lesson you have learned in your time as a game developer?

Collaboration is key! You can’t do everything yourself. There are people way better at other disciplines, and the final project will be much better!

What is the one piece of advice you would share today with your younger self before you started your career as a game developer?

Make smaller projects! Parts of those projects can be refined and added to the next one!

How has the game developer community had an impact on your career?

The game developer friends I’ve made in Seattle have been key to improving my work! Without them, I would have missed out on so many opportunities!

What is something interesting and unexpected that people would be surprised to learn about you?

I played the saxophone for many years! Doesn’t have much of an impact on my game development these days, unfortunately.

How can people follow you and your work?

Follow me on bluesky! https://bsky.app/profile/xythas.bsky.social

The Playtesting Club will take place now twice a month at the following locations and times:

Set up a laptop and have strangers from all walks of life try your game! It’s never too early to bring something – as a wise game developer once said, “as soon as you have something that you can move on the screen, hand someone the controller and see what they think.” Whether you have a simple prototype with programmer art or you’re close to shipping something, bring your game! We don’t require polished art here – make sure it’s fun before you pretty it up!

You’re going to get feedback either way – by playtesting, or eventually in your Steam reviews. Why not get ahead of it and get that feedback before you release? Come to Playtesting Club to ensure your steam reviews will be rock solid!

Looking for feedback on your game? Only had other game developers try it? Playtesting Club is for you!

RoboErik: I Herd Ewe by 1 2 Many Humans

My first game, I Herd Ewe, is now public and the Steam page is live for wishlisting! I’m planning to launch on Android later this year and Steam next year.

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4564970/I_Herd_Ewe/

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up4Y_u_2S1Q

I Herd Ewe is a cozy strategy game where you command your team of dogs to herd farm animals back home. Use each dog’s unique ability to round them up in as few turns as possible and earn all three bags of wool. If you prefer to take your time chasing the sheep around, don’t worry, there’s no failure condition or turn limit.

Also, a big thank you to Sam, Virgil, and Lester at the Trailer Workshop a couple weeks ago for all their advice!

Please let me know what you think!

Harassment Policy, AAPI, Black Lives Matter, and Resources

Seattle Indies stands with the AAPI community. We are here for our members who have been affected by the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes both locally and nationally. For further resources to educate yourself on the issue and how to take action, here is a useful link: https://anti-asianviolenceresources.carrd.co/

Seattle Indies believes the stories of the victims of sexual harassment and assault in the games industry that have been shared. We strongly condemn the actions by people in power preying on the dreams of vulnerable people trying to make their way in the industry. We strive to build an inclusive community that welcomes all minorities to provide a safe environment and a better vision for the game industry.

While our code of conduct states a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, we are especially sensitive to the daily challenges faced by womxn due to the ingrained sexism that has existed in the structure of the games industry for far too long. We are actively working to build a better community of game developers, and we all need to do better.

Additionally, Board Member Angel Mero  has offered to be a personal resource for anyone who needs help, someone to talk to or some guidance on next steps if you have experienced harassment in the industry either at our events or elsewhere. She can be reached at angel@seattleindies.org.

Our friends at Take This Org have compiled valuable resources for anyone in immediate need of professional help for their situation.

Lastly, Seattle Indies and Diversity Collective+ support Black Lives Matter.
