September 2026 Update

Aug 31st, 2026 by Kylie Hammett

Hello Indies!

September is coming and we are just days away from the second annual SLICE and the 16th annual Seattle Indies Expo (SIX)! It is a full week of fun events during and around PAX West/Labor Day here in the States. Starting off with SLICE On Wednesday 9/2.

SLICE returns to McCaw Hall this Wednesday with an absolutely stellar lineup of speakers, panels, roundtables, lectures, the PocketGamer Big Indie Pitch competition, the Creative Clinic, Speed Networking and so much more. Read all about the highlights here. Still time to get your tickets and check out the full lineup. SLICE is a one day games industry conference aimed at Indie and AA developers and studio founders. There are over 25,000 people working in the games industry in the Greater Seattle area and there has been no dedicated games industry conference regularly hosted here since PAX Dev ceased operations in 2019. SLICE is our way of filling that void and providing an accessible and affordable event for everyone to attend without needing to travel to California, Germany or beyond to meet the same people you will meet at SLICE. Tickets start at $49.99 for students and are just $129.99 for All Access passes. People impacted by layoffs can claim tickets at 50% off with no codes needed and abundant 25% off discount codes can be stacked on the already discounted tickets to make it as affordable as possible for you and allowing us to pay for the event, which is 100% volunteer organized and run.

There is still time to donate to our fundraiser to send Women and marginalized developers to SLICE. With your donations and matching funds from our sponsors we are working to raise $2,600 to send 26 women and marginalized developers to SLICE. At the time this article was being written just crossed the community goal of $1,500 raised to unlock another $500 in matching funds putting us at $2,000 leaving us just $300 away from unlocking the final match to get to our goal of $2,600. Donate now!

Thursday night we invite you to a special event at Shibuya HiFi (ticket required) featuring a listening of the soundtrack of Star Wars Outlaws by our very own Wilbert Roget, II. This soundtrack was not publicly released on vinyl and Wilbert will be on hand with his own copy to join you in listening to the soundtrack in the HiFi room at Shibuya and chat about his favorite selections.

Friday night join the Conspire crew for the official After-after party of SLICE and pre-party for SIX. We’ll be starting things off at Rabbit Box under Pike Place Market from 5-7pm and then migrating to The Coliseum of Art at 7:30 for the final show in their Friday night series of art and music events featuring local legends Thunderpussy! Spots are limited so keep an eye on your email and the Seattle Indies Discord for the invite link very soon.

The MIX is also happening on Friday night and our friends would love to see you there checking out and playing their amazing lineup of games and meeting some great indie developers.

Saturday night we take a bit of a breather to set up for the 16th annual edition of SIX! Seattle Indies Expo is back on Sunday September 6th and it is bigger and better than ever with 40 games voted on by our community judges, selected from a record 115 submissions. Check out the supercut trailer and Hype Hour (that turned into 2 hours) where our amazing SIX Online crew watched and live reacted to all of the trailers for the games we are showcasing at SIX IRL and SIX Online this year. In addition to the 40 games selected by our judges we’ll have a selection of games from Chile Games Showcase, Games from Ukraine along with student games from DigiPen Institute of Technology, AIE, Bellevue College, Sno-Isle Skills Tech Center and more. So come to Hilton Motif Seattle from Noon – 9pm for a full day of free family fun, playing indie games, talking to creators and learning more about the Seattle Indies community. Read more about Chile Game Showcase Organizer Nahir Fajardo in this month’s Spotlight Interview below.

2026 is also our tenth year of operating as a non-profit organization and to celebrate we will be hosting a silent auction at SIX where you can bid on some amazing, exclusive and rare gaming artifacts and memorabilia including the last ID@Xbox skateboard deck that will ever be produced and the only one signed by the former and current heads of the Xbox Org at Microsoft. Nintendo has donated a full Switch 2 package, local studios and legends are digging into their archives to provide items that will only be available at SIX. All proceeds will benefit Seattle Indies and our ongoing mission to support game developers in the Puget Sound Region and will help keep events like SIX and the rest of our events free or very low cost to attend.

If you haven’t had enough of us by then you are all welcome to join us at Orient Express on Monday night for the iconic Post-PAX Indie Developer Mixer 2026 (aka the Train Party). If you have never been to Orient Express you definitely need to check it out at least once. Devs from all over will be gathering to celebrate a successful SLICE/SIX/PAX weekend, enjoy some Asian cuisine, sing a little karaoke if you like and beware of the stiff drinks there or indulge yourself to your liking. If you are drinking I would recommend taking a ride share or having a DD due to the strong pours there.

We closed out August with the chaos of Jimothy Jamothy! The game jam centered around local internet legend Jimothy! 92 jammers joined us to make 28 games all centered around Jimothy! I put out the challenge that if we got more than 25 submissions I would get a Jimothy tattoo and you responded. I will do my best to have it done before SLICE but will definitely have it by SIX this Sunday so be sure to find me and look for it. Play and judge the games now and pick your favorites. We will be showing the gameplay videos on the main screen at SLICE prior to the opening talk at 9am so get your video submitted on the Thread on Discord and we’ll make sure it gets added to the playlist.

As a part of this year’s National Women’s Equity Day, Seattle Indies is taking action to elevate women and marginalized creators in the Pacific Northwest game industry!

To celebrate Seattle Indies 10th anniversary as a non-profit and Year 2 of SLICE 2026, we’ve set a campaign goal: Raise at least $2,600 to send 26 women and underrepresented developers to SLICE with full-access passes.

These passes will give recipients priority entry to our Women in Games Breakfast (generously sponsored by K&L Gates and Ladybug Ventures) and our morning leadership roundtables;

Every $100 raised sponsors a full ticket for a peer developer. Whether you donate $10 or cover a full pass, help us pack the room!

https://donorbox.org/slice-donations-2026

For more information, please visit the following article on the Seattle Indies Website: https://seattleindies.org/celebrate-national-womens-equity-day-help-us-send-26-women-marginalized-creators-to-slice-2026/

If you’ve got an idea for a session for SLICE, please fill out the SLICE 2026 Call for Content: https://forms.gle/RPcZPRzdhpiLe8nr9

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our slots for panels and lectures are currently full for SLICE 2026. A Roundtable pitch is your best bet for inclusion.

Introducing Portfolio Alley! At SLICE, we’re going to display the one-page portfolio of everyone who submits one (in person and online). No need to go to SLICE yourself (though you totally should). So if you’re an artist, designer, etc., with a visual portfolio, we highly recommend submitting a one-page version to get your work and contact info in front of a lot of eyes! Add yours here: https://forms.gle/ofsQV3obCPsjBdJu5

Pocket Gamer is hosting Big Indie Pitch at SLICE! If you’ve been to PG Connects you might be familiar with the format. Teams with an unreleased game can take their pitch in front of experts to get feedback and compete for coverage on Pocket Gamer. It’s open to all games, mobile, PC, and console. SIX (Seattle Indies Expo) –  Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM

SIX is a free one-day celebration of independent games and game creators from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We consistently hear from attendees that SIX is one of the best events of that entire weekend alongside the other major gaming expo happening around the corner from SIX and in 2025 we welcomed nearly 5,000 guests who came through to spend the day checking out the games and chatting with the developers and community members.

Check out the Promotional Trailer made by our very own Angel Mero: https://youtu.be/hrNuU8HuZkM

Earlier this Summer, SIX Submissions closed with a new record of 115 submissions, smashing the 90 submissions we received last year! In 2025 we selected the top 40, both all-time records in our 15 year history and we expect no less in 2026!

Check out our nominees in the SIX 2026 Supercut with the reel made by Angel Mero and the music by Chris V.: https://youtu.be/w7G3Oqh5qe8

Additionally, due to the high demand and increase in quality of the games we were able to expand SIX 2025 to take over two full ballrooms in Hilton Motif Seattle. We also combined SIX Online, our streaming showcase of the games with our in-person showcase and managed to interview all 40 teams on the live stream to help build the buzz both in-person and online for our biggest day of the year.

We will be returning to do the same on Sunday September 6th, 2026 with a full day of incredible locally-made indie games and the developers who made them!

Want to volunteer for SIX 2026? Sign up now to be a part of our biggest public facing event of the year https://six.seattleindies.org/volunteer

SIX IRL will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM on the 3rd & 4th floors of the Hilton Motif Seattle (1415 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101)

For Early September events in gaming, there will be many events across Seattle including SIX and SLICE which have been featured here: https://www.sidequesting.com/2026/07/the-ultimate-pax-west-2026-party-list-your-guide-to-all-the-parties-and-events/

Post-PAX Indie Developer Mixer 2026 (Monday, September 7th from 8:00 PM to 4:00 PM)

Kick back and relax with one last developer shindig after a busy PAX. This party is a time-honored tradition originating in 17-Bit’s former Seattle warehouse office, as an informal post-PAX Megabooth and indie friends party. It’s a great chance to catch up with friends from out of town before the next big event.

This is being revived at a nearby venue, Orient Express Restaurant and Lounge (2963 4th Ave S, Seattle, Washington 98134 · Seattle, WA), a 10-minute Uber from the convention center (and plenty of parking if you’re driving). It’s a super-cool collection of retired luxury train cars that have been joined together to create an open area, in addition to several side cars with seating. We’ve booked out the entire venue. Drinks and food will be available for purchase. The venue is well air-conditioned and air-filtered, and it’s pretty big, so feel free to explore the nooks and crannies so the bar area doesn’t get overly crowded. There’s even a karaoke train car in the back!

This event is open to independent developers and indie-adjacent folks (regardless of if you attended PAX). This is not a general attendee PAX party.

Orient Express closes at 2am, but there’s a Denny’s across the street for everyone who wants an after-afterparty!

Slow and Steady Jam: July-August 2026

Looking for a time and place to work on a project? Want a deadline and accountability partners for something you’re doing? There is an event for that!

The Slow and Steady Jam is a themeless 2 month jam to bring your own project and get creating. https://itch.io/jam/slow-and-steady-jam-jul-aug-2026

This Month’s feature is Nahir Fajardo – Mizu

CEO & Producer at Dreams of Heaven Games and organizer of the Chile Game Showcase. With a background as a social worker focused on neurodivergence, she leads indie game initiatives, advocates for underrepresented developers, and builds international bridges to connect global gaming ecosystems.

Chile Game Showcase 2025: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laePHJ29Nb8&t=2s

What inspired you to become a game developer?

Initially, I stepped into the industry simply because people around me were involved, and I wanted to see how I could support them using my background. Once inside, I quickly realized how many meaningful ways there were for me to contribute—not just creating networks within a studio, but supporting the broader industry through connections, research, giving talks, and helping unlock brand-new horizons.

What is one important lesson you have learned in your time as a game developer?

We often hold ourselves back because we wait for guaranteed visibility or a financial reward. While staying financially viable is essential, I’ve learned that incredible projects can be built even without massive resources. When you simply take action, you inevitably meet amazing people along the way and form alliances that widen your horizons further than you ever expected.

What is the one piece of advice you would share today with your younger self before you started your career as a game developer?

Don’t box yourself into societal expectations. The dogma of “choose just one thing and be the best at it” does a lot of harm. If you want to pursue multiple passions, do it! Learn everything that curiosity calls you to. I’ve always admired great minds from history who were simultaneously philosophers, scientists, and mystics—all of those facets can coexist beautifully in a single person.

How has the game developer community had an impact on your career?

The community has truly pushed me to become who I am today. Alongside my partner and daughter, who back every wild idea I come up with, game dev communities have constantly motivated me, cheered me on to take bigger leaps, and provided a kind of recognition and warmth that isn’t often found in other spaces.

What is something interesting and unexpected that people would be surprised to learn about you?

People are usually shocked to learn that I am deeply shy! All through school, my university studies, and past jobs, I rarely spoke up and hated being the center of attention—yet I absolutely love giving talks about video games and sharing my research with others. On top of that: I am autistic, became a mom at a very young age, have an absolute phobia of ants, and dislike red-colored foods!

How can people follow you and your work?

The Playtesting Club will take place now twice a month at the following locations and times:

Set up a laptop and have strangers from all walks of life try your game! It’s never too early to bring something – as a wise game developer once said, “as soon as you have something that you can move on the screen, hand someone the controller and see what they think.” Whether you have a simple prototype with programmer art or you’re close to shipping something, bring your game! We don’t require polished art here – make sure it’s fun before you pretty it up!

You’re going to get feedback either way – by playtesting, or eventually in your Steam reviews. Why not get ahead of it and get that feedback before you release? Come to Playtesting Club to ensure your steam reviews will be rock solid!

Looking for feedback on your game? Only had other game developers try it? The Playtesting Club is for you!

Join us for a lively Happy Hour, an extension of the Games and Education Industry Collider! Building upon the conversations sparked at the collider event, this happy hour provides a relaxed and engaging environment to further connect professionals from both industries. Settle in for an evening of networking, sharing insights, and fostering new collaborations. Whether you attended the collider or this is your first time joining, let’s continue to bridge the gap between games and education, creating meaningful connections and opportunities for innovation. Additionally, be sure to watch out for more happy hours throughout the year to sustain the collaborative momentum between annual events! The Games and Education Industry Happy Hour will be on Thursday, September 17th from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Big Time Brewery (4133 University Wy NE, Seattle, WA 98105) in U District!

Joe Belousek: The Summoning Hour

Hey Ya’ll! I’ve recently restarted my podcast, The Summoning Hour. It is an Everything Game Development podcast. I’ve got 8 episodes out recently and I’m still just warming up! If you want to be a guest or know someone I should talk to, I’m open to chat about it!

The latest episode of The Summoning Hour takes a candid look at game-development hiring with senior talent partner Christeen Mackey.

We talk about what happens behind the scenes, why recruiters receive so much frustration for decisions they may not control, how resumes and job descriptions manage risk, the real cost of interviewing, practical AI resume advice, and why people should not give up on making games.

The goal was to put a human voice behind a discipline that many candidates encounter but rarely get to understand.

Listen: https://thesummoninghour.riverside.com/e/the-truth-about-game-dev-hiring-christeen-mackey

If you listen, I’d be interested to hear which part changed or challenged how you think about recruiting.

Jaden | Snowfall Games: Portentum (by Snowfall Games)

Portentum Announcement

We just announced our latest game at Snowfall Games, Portentum! A cryptid themed deck-building auto battler. Hunt for broken combos using cryptids from around the world like Bigfoot, Jimothy , the Wendigo, and the Chupacabra. If somebody’s uncle saw it in the woods in 1973, there’s a good chance it’s a card in Portentum.

JoshVer: Seven Suns of Orion (by FerroFerrous)

I just released my game on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4385510/Seven_Suns_of_Orion

I wanted to mix Star Control style movement with Survivor-like gameplay. I also wanted the different playable ships to all feel unique and to keep the rounds much shorter than most survivor likes, so I landed on 7 and ran with it. Survive Seven Minutes w/ Seven Playable Ships across 7 Levels each with their own Boss.

Tony: LEXICON: Lingua Obscura (by T-Squared Games)

This is it! The LEXICON demo is live!

This is the culmination of a year’s worth of solo work building my word puzzle roguelite. It feels a little surreal to finally have something playable on Steam after working on it day and night for so long.

LEXICON combines the big number combos of Balatro, the procedural dungeon runs of Slay the Spire, and a splash of the spooky meta puzzles of Inscryption. You build words, create ridiculous combos, and dig deeper into a strange abandoned computer system as the story starts to unfold.

I’m incredibly proud to finally put the demo in front of everyone. I would love it if you gave it a try, shared your feedback, left a review, and wishlisted the full game.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me while I worked toward this day. A special shout out to my primary playtesters, my wife Meghan and my 7 year old son Ben. I’m pretty sure his vocabulary has grown from playing the game so much.

You can grab the demo here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4940970/LEXICON_Demo/

Harassment Policy, AAPI, Black Lives Matter, and Resources

Seattle Indies stands with the AAPI community. We are here for our members who have been affected by the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes both locally and nationally. For further resources to educate yourself on the issue and how to take action, here is a useful link: https://anti-asianviolenceresources.carrd.co/

Seattle Indies believes the stories of the victims of sexual harassment and assault in the games industry that have been shared. We strongly condemn the actions by people in power preying on the dreams of vulnerable people trying to make their way in the industry. We strive to build an inclusive community that welcomes all minorities to provide a safe environment and a better vision for the game industry.

While our code of conduct states a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, we are especially sensitive to the daily challenges faced by womxn due to the ingrained sexism that has existed in the structure of the games industry for far too long. We are actively working to build a better community of game developers, and we all need to do better.

Additionally, Board Member Angel Mero  has offered to be a personal resource for anyone who needs help, someone to talk to or some guidance on next steps if you have experienced harassment in the industry either at our events or elsewhere. She can be reached at angel@seattleindies.org.

Our friends at Take This Org have compiled valuable resources for anyone in immediate need of professional help for their situation.

Lastly, Seattle Indies and Diversity Collective+ support Black Lives Matter. Here are some resources compiled by Diversity Collective+ for how you can offer support, whether this is financial, contributing to petitions, preparing for protests, or getting informed. If you have additional resources, comment below and we will add them.
